Caffeine Boost

Updated: Aug 24, 2020

Ingredients: Olive oil, brewed coffee, coconut oil, sodium hydroxide, White palm oil

-Good for deodorant ( hence great for kitchen and garden work)

-Good for oily skin

One thing that surprised me when I started working in my last company was my coworkers’ preferences for morning drinks in the office. It was an international IT company and they gave me many opportunities to go on overseas business trips.

It might be just me but I got really surprised that my western coworkers drank lots of coffee, especially in the morning!

My American husband also can’t live without coffee.

That was a big surprise for me as our culture is more like tea culture. We grow lots of types of tea but not coffee.

Every spring, I used to go to my grandma’s, and helped her cut and dry tea leaves to make homemade tea for the year.

I also couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw my husband drinking sweetened green tea!

I’d never even seen sweet green tea before in Japan!

He said it’s so tasty and my reaction was just ‘SERIOUSLY?!?!’ haha

Thanks to these experiences I came to the idea of adding some coffee in soap, especially since I see it every morning.

Base oil is olive oil as it is very soft for skin.

Its moisturizing ability is beautiful. This is because more than 70% of its make-up is oleic acid, which doesn’t irritate skin very much, and makes the soap very good for moisturizing.

If you look up “olive oil skin benefit,” you can find so much information about that. :)

To add hardness and stability, white palm oil is great.

It doesn’t really have any skin benefit, so just an enough to cover the softness that olive oil soap makes is perfect.

For some bubbly sensation, we call in our cleansing hero: coconut oil!

Soaps made from this oil are firm, easy to melt even with cold water, and we also get rich smooth bubbles.

Its cleansing power is strong so if we use it a lot, the soap makes skin too dry as it takes too much stuff from our skin. But because of that characteristic, it’s said that it feels good for those who have oily skin.

If ground coffee powder itself is used, then it should have a strong scrub and deodorant effect.

This soap, however, just has some brewed coffee in it, so it doesn’t have that strong effect. So you can enjoy a bubble with a hint of coffee scent and slight deodorant power without a possibility of stimulating your skin too much :)

The keyword is ‘mild’ for this one.

Before the soap starts to be hard, it has way darker color like espresso. As it becomes cured, the color becomes more like milk coffee. I love this gentle color, it is very warm and natural.

I especially like to use it for dish washing!

These rich bubbles take all stuff on used kitchen utensils away and leave them very clean and fresh.

I feel like it takes the smell of food away as well and leaves a very slight coffee scent on them.

It makes dish washing more enjoyable :)

Of course, it’s great for showering as well. It might make you feel more awake by getting a caffeine boost! Haha.

Any you use it, I hope you like the feeling!
